GW Weekly Nov. 27 - Dec. 1 | Season of Giving, Book Fair, Athletics, Lost & Found, Purdys, Movember

GW Season of Giving Starts Dec. 1

A grade 9 student led this initiative to give back and do charity work a few years ago with the whole school. It was a big success. She actually ended up winning an award for her work with our school community. Our school, led by our Community Care classes are a going to continue the tradition. Having tangible items donated really helps students see the positive impact our school can have when we all come together. Here are the details:

  • Starts Friday Dec. 1
  • Your child’s class will collect an item specified on the list under Resources (this is a list of most needed items at the Drop-In Centre) until Monday Dec. 18
  • All materials collected go the Drop-In Centre
  • Classes will work together to do some card making that we will include in the care packages that Community Care classes will be putting together of all the items collected
  • A video about the Drop-In Centre, it’s their 61st year of supporting Calgarians: https://youtu.be/AHMqRf9Rx-I

Scholastic Book Fair is Coming this Friday!

Hooray, the Scholastic Book Fair is coming soon to Griffith Woods!

Starting on December 1, we will have a kickoff to the Book Fair in the library from 12:00pm - 2:30pm so that families can come shop the fair.

From December 4 to December 7, students will have the opportunity to come to the fair during their weekly library time and over the lunch period. There will be a large selection of books for all reading levels for the kids to choose from.

Every purchase supports our school and helps keep our kids reading!

Thank you for participating in our Scholastic Book Fair.

Happy Reading!

Athletics

Congratulations to our Senior Girls for winning an exciting game against Westridge to bring the first ever basketball banner to Griffith Woods. They are division champions and they’ll be playing in the City Championships this week and we wish the coaches Ms. Read and Ms. Wood along with all the players the best of luck. A shout out to the Junior Girls for their hard fought game in the finals last week. Thank you to Mrs. Huse and Mr. Rathje for leading the team to such a successful season.

We’ll be wrapping up the season with our Staff vs. Student games and wrap up parties. Staff have been getting prepared to keep their winning streak going!

Volleyball tryouts will happen in the New Year for Junior and Senior Boys and Girls teams. Details about that will come out closer to the dates.

Lost and Found

If you wish to come to the school to see if any of your child(ren)'s items are in the lost and found please check in at the Main Office and go take a look. It is very helpful when clothing is labeled. Before the holidays items will be bagged up and donated to a charity.

Purdys Chocolate Fundraiser

Thank you Friends of Griffith Woods Fundraiser Society for organizing this fundraiser for the school and to the families for your generous chocolate purchasing! We have raised close to $3000 dollars that will go directly to supporting our students.

Staff Participating in Movember

3 Days to go! So far we have raised close to $1500! Mr. McGinitie is leading the Staff at GW in participating in Movember, with the money going to local charities. The donations through CanadaHelps are tax deductible (receipt issued immediately). No pressure to donate but think about all the fresh faces in the building on December 1.

During this campaign, there will be donation benchmarks as follows:

$250 - Mr. Molyneux grows and shaves a moustache
$500 - Facial Hairless Mr. Hyslop and a clean shaven Mr. Innes after growing out the beard
$750 - Mrs. Chorney will wear a face painted beard for a day. √
$1000 - Mr. Pidkowa shaves his beard √
$3000 - Mr. McGinitie shaves his moustache
$4000 - Mr. Kearney will shave off his moustache
$5000 - Mr. Finlay will shear the beard
$7000 - Mr. Jordan will shave his beard (his partner of 25 years has never seen him clean shaven)
$8000+ Hopefully more follicle'd educators to follow!
