Library News May 2025

Although the school year is coming to an end, there is still some excitement coming to the library at the end of May. During the week of May 26 - May 30 the Scholastic Book Fair is coming back to Griffith Woods. It will run during school hours and will also remain open after school for families on May 29 until 3:30pm and May 30 until 1:30pm.Our previous book fairs have been so well received by the school community that it was decided to run a second fair this year. Thank you for your support! These book fairs give back directly to the library.

To ensure a smooth-running fair, we will be needing some volunteer support. No previous book fair experience is required! See the volunteer link for available time slots:

Griffith Woods School: Scholastic Book Fair Volunteers

Finally, the last week of book exchange for students is only a few short weeks away. Thank you for ensuring that students are returning books to school every week. Notices of overdue books will be sent home for any books not returned.

Thank you for your support in the library. It is so appreciated!

GW Cereal Box Challenge

We are excited that this years Cereal Box Dominoes fundraiser has kicked off.  We are hoping that each student can bring in at least two boxes of cereal to donate to the Calgary Foodbank.  Another option is to make a donation directly to the Calgary Foodbank using this QR Code.  Every $5.00 donated = 1 box of cereal.  Don't forget to indicate what teacher/classroom the donation is for so that can count to their class total for prizes! Donations will be accepted through the QR Code until May 20.  The Food bank will be picking up the cereal on Friday May 23.  Thank you for all of your support.

A Heartfelt Thank You from Friends of Griffith Woods School Society

As we wrap up another incredible year and reflect on the successes shared at our recent AGM, I would like to extend my gratitude to every member of the Friends of Griffith Woods School Society. Your time, effort, and dedication has made an incredible difference this year.

The team would like to thank all the parents and grandparents who volunteered at our last casino. With the casino money we were able to fund a wide range of programs, resources, and experiences that enriched the lives of students across all grades.

Here’s what we accomplished together:

  • Option fee supports for Grades 5/6
  • Band Camp support
  • Gym equipment – Outdoor play unit
  • Technology top-ups: iPads, Chromebooks, carts, and a Smart Board for the gym
  • Havana Dance Residency
  • Subsidized Grade 7–9 PJ's and Popcorn event
  • Elder in residence (Saa'kokoto & Ani to pisi)
  • Bookshelves for the library
  • 3D printer
  • Sensory Room
  • Musical instruments, including Tubano drums and three new band instruments
  • Garden signage
  • Barrier Lake Busses- Grade 9
  • Esports Club (remotes and console)
  • Bussing for 1 field trip for every grade
  • Swimming busses

Each of these items represents an opportunity, whether for learning, creativity, wellness, or connection, and none of it would have been possible without our incredible community.

If you’re interested in getting involved, we would love to have you join us! Please reach out to president@fgwss.org. We’re always grateful to welcome new members to our team.

Our next casino fundraiser is scheduled for Q1 2026. Keep an eye out for sign-up details—we’d love to see you there!

Thank you for continuing to make a lasting impact at Griffith Woods School.

School Council Parent Presentation on Thursday June 5 at 6:30pm in the Main Gym

The Parent council is happy to organize a session for our amazing parent community to be more connected to their students, We will also have a raffle draw for the parents at the session for $100 for the KEG. The draw will be made at the end of the session. Please join us for a great session with Ms. Bogle.

'Mom of three and Registered Psychologist Stephanie Bogle invites you to join us for an engaging and thoughtful conversation about parenting in today’s world — one filled with both opportunity and overwhelming noise.

This 1-hour session is designed to offer encouragement, insight, and practical strategies to help you parent from a place of clarity, confidence, and connection — not comparison!

A few of the topics we’ll explore include:

  • Healthy Boundaries
What boundaries really are (and aren’t), why they matter, and how to set them with calm, respectful authority.
  • The Empowered “No”
Why saying “no” is an act of love — and how to do it without guilt or power struggles.
  • Shame & Self-Compassion
How shame (often unintentional) affects our children — and how we can shift toward parenting that empowers instead of wounds.
  • Social Media & Parenting Pressure
We’ll unpack the unrealistic parenting ideals we absorb online — and how to filter out the noise so you can stay true to your values.
  • Finding Your Authentic Style
There’s no one “right way” to parent. We’ll help you reflect on your own values and build a parenting approach that feels grounded and true to you.

We hope you leave feeling reassured, informed, and inspired to trust your own path.'
