CUPE Job Action Strike

Our school will remain open, prioritizing in-person learning regardless of labour action.  There are no changes to start and end times.  With the strike starting Monday for our cleaners, facility operators, heavy duty mechanics, locksmiths and members involved in snow removal, grounds maintenance and other lines of work there will be some changes to allow for schools to be cleaned adequately after school hours.

  • Students and staff will be asked to leave the school no later than 45 minutes after the bell
  • The volleyball season will continue as scheduled but athletics beyond that will be paused
  • Attendance at athletic games will be limited to parents/guardians of those athletes directly involved in the event.  Students will not be permitted to attend athletic games unless they are the siblings of one of the athletes and are accompanied by a parent/guardian.  Access will be limited to the gymnasium
  • School Council will be moved online

Alberta Education Assurance Survey

Grade 4 and 7 students, along with teachers and parents of Grade 4 and 7 students will be asked to complete this survey.  This survey provides feedback to Alberta Education on students’, teachers’, and parents' / legal guardians' opinions about their school, their school work and the opportunities their school provides.  It also provides important information on the quality of education students are receiving.

The results are:

  • used by schools, school authorities and the government to see what’s working and what needs to be improved; and
  • shared with the whole community.
  • Note | Surveys are sent only to the custodial parent/guardian of the student, as Alberta Education uses the student information to determine the sample. The intent of this survey is to provide each student’s family with one voice, which is why the survey is only sent to the custodial parent/guardian of the student.

Survey on School Finances and School Development Plan

Each year we invite parents to take a brief survey to provide feedback on our School Development Plan and finances. We know that everyone is busy but this survey provides us with valuable feedback for planning next year.  It is open Feb 24 to Feb 28. Thankyou!

Celebrate Pink Shirt Day on Wednesday February 26

We will be taking the time on Wednesday in classes to celebrate Pink Shirt Day.  It would be great if your child could come to school wearing pink to represent Anti-Bullying.

Cell Phone/Personal Device Policy

For students in kindergarten to Grade 9, CBE will use ‘away for the day’ guidelines similar to what many schools have been using in recent years. Personal mobile devices brought to school including cell phones, tablets, gaming devices, laptops, smart watches, Bluetooth speakers/headphones or any personal electronic device that can be used to communicate with or access the internet must be powered off or set in silent mode and stored out of sight in student lockers, backpacks or other designated area for the duration of the school day, including at the end of the day.   If a student has a cell phone it must be handed in to their teacher at the beginning of the day and will be returned at the end of the day.

If a student is found to be using a personal mobile device in class without permission from the teacher, the CBE will work with the student to ensure the rules are understood. We rely on good communication and other existing processes to ensure students know what is expected. When necessary, schools will use a progressive student discipline approach in working with students.

The progressive discipline steps are outlined below;

  • The device is confiscated by the teacher.
  • Should this continue to be an issue, the device will be sent to the office for the remainder of the day and parents will be contacted.
  • Finally, students will be required to leave their phone at home or check it in at the office in the morning.

These new rules will apply to all students, with exceptions for students using devices for health and medical needs, to support specialized learning needs and for educational purposes.

Celebration of Learning & Parent-Teacher Conferences

We'll be inviting parents/guardians to come in with their child to view and celebrate their work in their classroom(s).  Our Celebration of Learning will be happening on Friday March 7 from 1-3pm.

Parent/Teacher conferences will be occurring over two Friday afternoons.  They'll be a choice of having an In-Person conference or an Online one.  Friday March 14 Parent-Teacher Conferences will be In-Person, from 1pm-4pm and on Friday March 21 they will be Online from 8am-12pm.  The booking system will open up on Friday March 7 at 6pm.

There are not enough spots in Grade 5-9 classrooms for all families to have a conference, so it is important to be checking MyCBE regularly for assessment and attending the Celebration of Learning.  If your child is doing well and there are no concerns it is not necessary to sign up for a conference in March.
