Open House and Harvest Festival

A reminder that families are invited tonight from 4:00-5:30 p.m. to meet the Teachers.  This is a drop in event but children must be accompanied by their Parents.  Teachers will be available in classrooms, and our Physical Education team will have an information table set up in the hallway. Please note that the gyms will be closed during the event. As this is an introductory gathering, it is not intended for individual discussions about student academic progress. Thank you for helping us make this a welcoming and positive experience for all families.

The Harvest Festival is led by School Council and will be outside from 4:00-7:30.  Families are welcome to come and check out food trucks and socialize.

Orange Shirt Day

Truth and Reconciliation remains a key priority for the Calgary Board of Education and an important commitment within the current Education Plan. As we continue to advance the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Action, we recognize the importance of ongoing learning, meaningful action, and building respectful relationships with one another and our communities.

Griffith Woods school will be honouring Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day by connecting it with Ani to Pisi. This will be one of our acts of Reconcili-ACTION this year and we will hold both Orange Shirt Day and Ani to Pisi on October 5th.

Griffith Woods School will be joined by Elder Roy Bear Chief (who is a residential school survivor) and so enacting Ani to Pisi with him and Elder Hayden Melting Tallow is a significant act of honouring Blackfoot ways of knowing and being. Please ask your child about this event to hear the things that they are doing to learn about both events.

Ani to Pisi is a Blackfoot creation story that symbolizes human interconnectedness.

Sept. 30 Community Events in Moh’kins’tsis  (Calgary)

All CBE staff, students, families, friends, and neighbors are invited to continue learning and show support at the fifth annual National Day for Truth and Reconciliation & Orange Shirt Day event taking place at the Confluence Historic Site on Wednesday, Sept. 30 from 9-10:30 a.m.

This important community gathering is a collaboration between the City of Calgary, CBE, Calgary Catholic School District, Calgary Police Service, Calgary Fire Department, and The Confluence.

Terry Fox Run

Friday, Sept 18 - We could not have asked for a better day to host our Griffith Woods Terry Fox Run!  On Friday, our day started with a virtual presentation from a representative of the Terry Fox Foundation. Students learned all about Terry- his life growing up as a student and athlete and the legacy that lives on. This was followed further by some facts about Terry's 'Marathon of Hope'.  His preparation, features about the prosthetic that he used for the run, and adversities that he faced while running before he was forced to stop. Then, our entire student population headed out into the sunshine to start their run. Those who were a part of the self-nominated “Terry’s Crew” wore headbands with pride and did their very best to jog the entire time - an impressive feat! As a school, we ran more than 3000km in 40 minutes in honour of Terry Fox continuing his Marathon of Hope.

Thank you very much for your support this year.  It was fabulous to see so many families out either cheering students on or jogging/walking alongside them.

We are closing in on our $5000 fundraising goal for the Terry Fox Foundation this year.  At our last check in, Griffith Woods families had donated $3700, which is so greatly appreciated.  The donation website will remain open, so there is still time to donate. Cross Country Team Results

Congratulations to Sandyha, Jacobus and Grace in grade 6 finished top 20 in their races!

Parking

Just a reminder that we need our bus zones cleared for bus parking.  Otherwise, it is too dangerous for our students.  Our bus zones are marked with No Parking signs and they are located at the front of our school and by the side of our school (Springborough Blvd SW).  We know we do not have a lot of parking for parents available, and it may require parents to park further away and then walk to the school to get your child.  Thank you for your help in keeping our students safe.
